SS08-ing in Hyeres

This is rather hasty but I'm finding my time is not mine whilst I'm out here so if you can put up with the shoddiness for a few more days, that would be much appreciated. With The Sart (need I hyperlink? I think not...) roaming around Hyeres and an even bigger fash crowd about this year, it's no wonder that the fash stakes have gone up. Cafe Mode has already started to capture the best of the streetstyle here, as the lovely Geraldine is also out and about (I have a hard time asking people for their photo in English let alone in terrible French...).

However, I will make some very quickie post-it observations...

...a stronger abundance of Topshop seeing as they have started to ship to Europe...

...lots of boyfriend lux tuxedo jackets and by lots I mean practically everyone, with navy being a strong contender to overtake black ones...

...gladiator sandals aplenty both flat and heeled, tan and black, strappy, studded, designer and not...

...ambiguous gigantic leather totes that are unassuming, practical but add a nice silhouette...

...dropped crotch trousers that taper at the ankles and are rolled up a little...

...nude satins mixed with grey jersey...

...nothing faddy like stars/stripes, ruffles or florals (well not much...)...

...and this is beginning to sound like a Grazia report...

...must stop now before I start to believe words like 'faddy' should be in common use in everyday language...

Street Style: The Satorialist

The original documenter of street style The Satorialist has been busy photographing the most stylish cities in the world. Never straying far from home, he always returns to New York where there is never a shortage of stylish women sashaying in this season’s (and next) hottest trends. Though all his fashion picks/photos are inspiring, nothing delights me more than seeing the spring and summer outfits that are starting to pop up all over place. Just today I noticed a woman in D.C. dressed in a crisp, sleeveless, white shirt; a high-waisted navy A-line skirt; a brown leather belt wrapped high around her waist and 3 inch tan sandals – she looked fly and knew it! Above and in the slide below are some of the Satorialists' traffic-stopping sistas.

Posh and Ginger Spice are Friends Again

Spice Girls Geri Haliwell and Victoria Beckham have ended their long-standing feud for the sake of their children, Britain’s You Magazine reports.

The Beckham boys and Halliwell’s daughter Bluebell are playmates. In fact, 3-year-old Cruz Bechkam goes on play ‘dates’ with 2-year-old Bluebell.

The rift began when Halliwell quit the Spice Girls to start a solo career in 1998 and escalated when Victoria didn’t invite her former friend to her wedding. But, as the pair found out, a little dose of maternal bonding was the cure.

Rating: 3

Victoria goes down a few rungs from the posh-meter by wearing those hideous paint-blasted blast from the past jeans. From the waist down, she's looking like a struggling artist trying to eke out a living, nothing like the multimillionaire trophy wife that she is.

I’ve seen some really ugly jeans on some normally fashionable celebs recently. Oh dear, I hope paint-splattered bell-bottoms are not making a comeback.

Contest 3 has a Winner

Congrats to jumper_girl_06 for winning Customized Girl's Third Design Contest! She wins $200 and her design will be featured in the May 2nd issue of US Weekly.

contest3winner.jpg

We like the design because it's personalized, it shows smart use of the skull-and-crossbones clipart (via the pirate theme), and it kinda rhymes (Sherry's First Mate....Two Thousand Eight). Overall, an excellent design.

It was once again very difficult to choose because of all the great submissions. We had almost 900 (!) entries this time, and we were really thrilled with all the creativity and hard work on display. Thanks so much to all who entered!

And with that, Contest 4 is launched. Simply create, save and tag your design “contest 4″. Look for a post soon with all the details.

Thanks again, and congrats to jumper_girl_06.

Seriously, I am cornering the market on shirtdresses

Butterick 2628

I could barely make out the line drawing on this, and the seller said she had no clue whether or not it was complete ... and I bought it anyway. It's a sickness, right?

I am a sucker for these Butterick Four-Yard-Line patterns, though. I love the football reference in something marketed exclusively to women (and supposedly thrifty women at that!) but I liked the open collar with the front band and the full skirt a little more. I think this one will be fun to make.

I'm seriously considering making this shirtdress in a solid color, even. Wouldn't that be a switch? I just can't decide WHICH color. Pale blue and green are too hospitally; yellow shows too much dirt; black is too boring to sew, ditto white; red a little much for all that skirt ... I'm bored with pink lately, and orange would just be insane (not that I'm against insane, usually). I don't like brown in summer, and I never wear beige (or purple) if I can help it. What am I forgetting? Ooh, maybe a deep blue?

Blog the Blogger: Polished by tu-anh

Regular readers of the blog will instantly recognize tu-anh's name as the woman behind the scenes of the Fashion of Goodwill. She also ocassionally writes a blog on living a polished lifestyle. Perhaps you've seen our video on YouTube, no? Regardless, tu-anh and the DC Goodwill Fashionista are BFFs (that's Best Fashion Friends, natch) and she's put together an amazing spring look book, which will premiere on the Fashion of Goodwill website later this month. I can't wait!

I can only give you three hints to the fabulousness that will be the look book: vintage, beach, blues. That's it! My lips are sealed. In the meantime, I'll tide you over with her short and sweet responses to the DCGF's soon-to-be-famous five (plus one) questions. Forthwith, tu-anh's responses...

1. What is the first article of clothing you remember that you loved to wear? A white peter pan collared top made by my aunt. And collar was embroidered by me. I think I still have the pic somewhere. I was about 7 in Saigon. [Perhaps that inspired the early fashion sketch she did, at left? Um...probably not. But it's cool, right? -the DCGF]

2. Where is your favorite place to shop for a fashion bargain in the DC area?
Flea markets, (Clarendon, Eastern Mar
ket) Forever 21, Benetton Outlet, Goodwill, Salvation Army...

3. Where is your favorite place to shop for a fashion bargain outside of DC?
New York City flea markets of course! Sundays are the best days to find bargains…

4. Who is your current favorite designer? Don’t really have one, but always have been a fan of the work of John Galliano for Christian Dior and Vivienne Westwood [Those are some of Westwood's more, uh, understated pieces in the picture below. You know, something simple for Saturday brunch. -the DCGF]. Micheal Kors' designs are very nice and clean, too.

5. If you could own any single item from fashion past or present - money is no object! - what would it be? A pair of 4 inch dance heels with the best soft leather bottom and small white diamonds. I'd have them custom made in Italy, where it costs about $5500 for one pair. I love to dance and am very petite, so I need the height! The standard heels are as high as 3 inches...any higher has to be custom made.

Bonus Question: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?
No idea…do you know ? :)

Hey, tu-anh, I ask the questions around there. Kidding! Hang tight, dear readers, and check back next week when I announce the premiere of our spring look book. It's going to be fantastic! Oh, and you can still enjoy last year's pics and video, too, by visiting the site. Have a fashionable weekend...

Plan ahead - Dive into swimwear (part 1)

Dawn Vertrees Jewelry Designer

Dawn Vertrees must have a special eye that enables her to look at a plant or a flower, to translate that image in her mind to a drawing on paper, to create a wax model of that drawing using wax sheets and wax wire that can then be transformed into a rubber mold, then cast in silver with the minutest detail, so that us poor untalented folk can adorn our necks, wrists, and fingers with perfect replicas of flora that only Mother Nature can create. I am in awe.

It has to be magic. But, as it is with all master magicians, you can't see the sleight of hand.

jewelry designer

Pink Quartz Dogwood Slider Pendant

For twenty-five years, Dawn worked as a graphic designer and in the family business of designing trade show exhibits. A desire to try something new led her to create decorative soaps and lotions, but that still wasn't what she really wanted to do.

jewelry techniques

Gemstone and Leaf Rings

Shown in London Blue Topaz, Garnet, and Peridot Gemstones

"One thing I really like about this ring design are the weaved stems on the inside of the band and although most people will not see the inside of the ring, detail is a personal thing with me. I want to design the jewelry to look as if I went outside picked up fifteen leaves and weaved them together for a ring."

After experimenting with porcelain pottery, Dawn finally found her niche - jewelry making. Using everything from dental tools to heat pens, she meticulously cuts and shapes detailed leaves and flower petals out of thin wax sheets.

Then she creates her lovely floral necklaces, bracelets, and rings from these wax components - building each design, leaf by leaf, petal by petal. When she's happy with the piece, she has it cast in sterling silver.

This is where the magic begins, with a drawing:

Drawing of Orchid and Pearl Pendant

Dawn says: "I'm not sure what goes on in my head when I start designing one of my orchid pieces but when I see those little Phalas (orchids)...it's like looking at little faces and they are all saying...don't forget me."

Artist Statement

Born and raised in North Carolina, I was surrounded by artistic talent from an early age. The first thing I hope you'll notice about my work is the wonderful detail and faithful reproduction of every small detail I put into each piece, but I also hope that you will see the personality that I try to give each piece that brings it to life.

I started sculpting jewelry originally from porcelain. This medium allowed me to sculpt very fine detail, yet shape my leaves and flowers in a very natural and realistic way. However, porcelain proved itself to be somewhat fragile.

The solution was Sterling Silver! So I have successfully applied my sculpting techniques to sterling silver, producing flowing, natural designs. I have found a wonderful outlet for my artistic talents in designing and sculpting my unique jewelry. Every day is a new adventure, and every customer a new friend.

You can see all of Dawn's wonderful creations at her Ruby Lane Store. She even has a blog, Dawn Vertrees.

There, you will find some of the most unique and beautiful jewelry you've ever seen. The detail she creates with every piece is amazing.

My Picks!

Left to right: Recycled Denim Skirt, $34, www.azjeans.com; Lurex Denim Mini Skirt, $22.99, www.azjeans.com; Grey Mini Skirt, $19.50, www.wetseal.com; Miranda, $59.50, www.abercrombie.com
Left to right: Porkchop Pencil Skirt, $27.50, www.westseal.com; High Waist Denim Mini, $27.80, www.forever21.com; Indigo Denim Mini , $88, www.jcrew.com; Star Denim Skirt by Alexander McQueen, $223, www.shopbop.com

Denim obviously comes in many colors but I’ve always been drawn to darker and “dirtier” hues of denim like the mini from Abercrombie above. That said, a nice baby blue denim skirt is a classic and provides the perfect contrast to the bright, block colored tops that are everywhere this season. Make sure you get a skirt that isn’t too tight. Though it may look good in the store once you start walking it’ll continually ride up. Go for a slightly bigger size that will shrink in the wash to the perfect size.

It was Julie's Birthday, But I Got the Present ...

A little bird told me that Julie (of Damn Good Vintage) had a birthday earlier this week, and I thought maybe I'd head to her site and find something delicious to post and wish her a (belated) happy day ... and (of course) I ended up buying this:

McCalls 7952

It's not MY birthday until August, so this cannot be justified as a birthday present to ME. But -- isn't it adorable? I love the little gathers at the yoke. And that pink is just edible ... I'd use little covered buttons in a pink floral print, wouldn't you?

(I think the women on this pattern envelope are all in an art gallery, and are looking forward to going out to lunch afterwards. They will all have cake.)

Now, if you also wanted to celebrate Julie's birthday as an excuse to buy patterns, as I did, may I suggest this one?

Anne Adams 4811

Or maybe this one:

McCalls 3752

It's a B40! And it has a circle skirt! And the women on the pattern envelope are like a clone-race of fembots!

And, speaking of birthdays and excuses to go pattern-shopping, Jen at MOMSPatterns had a modem meltdown. And while LESSER women would yell and scream, Jen is offering a special sale: use the code 'friedmodem15' and save 15% off any sized order on the MOMSPatterns site all weekend and she'll ship as soon as she's back online with a broadband connection. (What's the birthday connection? Jen's birthday is tomorrow! Obviously a reason to BUY MORE PATTERNS.)

Happy birthday, everyone!

Post Picks

Ahhh, the first sign of Spring. Not when stores start to jettison sweaters and coats in December, or when Barney's announces it's warehouse sale, but when my favorite daily, the NY Post
has their week long Spring accessory feature! What could be more exciting than a centerfold of handbags?

I generally like this feature, because it is a pretty good hodge-podge of looks, with aspiring IT bags, some ugly bags, and some pretty random choices too.
It also gives a pretty quick idea of the trends their editors are looking at.
.
There are definitely a fair share of Birkin-esque bags shown, among them, a definite sleeper, Ralph Lauren's Legend, on the far left, in black patent and yellow. The vertical belt detail is a nice twist on the look. The Legend is $3,095 at Ralph Lauren Boutiques.
The insta-IT YSL Muse Two AKA Forever, also has a similar vertical detail, it is not a full belt however and makes it easier for non-Houdinis to get into their bag. On the downside, the handle is attached to the top flap, so if you aren't scrupulous about closing your bag, it will literally hang agape. It's $1,645 in the medium size.
A bag that I thought might not make it off the runway, the Jetsons looking Vuitton Motard Firebird has landed for spring. It's $5,250 of "what were they thinking?". maybe some consumer will think it so ugly, it's cool, like a Cabbage patch Kid or something. It looks like a bag of Easter hued fug to me.
Not much left to say about the bag on the right, it's the uber-hot Versace Bubble Bag. At $3,830 worth of gorgeousness, you can't get one in orange as reported right here last week.

Patchwork seems to be the newest big look, and it hadn't really sunk in until I saw 3 of these on one page. The leftmost bag, Miu Miu's woven looking patchwork of diamonds in shades of red, pink, and mauve is adorable. I like the "peek-a-boo" lining popping out over the gathered top. The braided handle gives it a deluxe pouch look. It sells for $1,595 at Miu miu.
The middle top bag, from Dolce & Gabbana is the Ayers Patchwork Miss Pocket bag. Now this is what I think of when I think patchwork...and I shudder at the thought. This looks more like Coach, or Lucky Brand (which has been selling a patchwork bag for years) than Dolce. even if it is made from colorful blocks of snake, it looks cheesy, and not like $3,995 bag. The style, on the other hand, is pretty nice. It's folded into a clutch here, but it is a cute satchel with a front pocket when unfurled. It is listed as available at Bergdorf Goodman, but is not on their website yet.
Another bag, also featured here a few posts back, is the Stripe bag from Prada. This is patchwork done right. This particular style is $2,360, from Prada. I love the juxtaposition of the Prada and Miu Miu bags. Both are so similar, and so different...I can see the Miu Miu as a younger interpretation of the Prada.
Not patched, but pleated, Mulberry's Poppy bag is at the bottom middle. I like that this bag is just unlike anything else. It's mot as heavy looking as Mulberry tends to, and I think the pleats are elegant and timeless. Of course, being Mulberry, there is some big hardware in the way of a brass side zipper. It's $1,795 from Mulberry.

Another apparent trend which is still clinging on, is shiny stuff. I really haven't embraced patent...could be the fingerprints on the bags I pick up in the stores...I mean if they show smudges that easily... Still there is nothing like a shiny red anything to make me think "I want" and Alexander McQueen's Flapper bag, top left does just that. It looks like a cross between a YSL Downtown and a classic bowling bag...with a Muse of a turnlock thrown in. It's $1,1690 at Alexander McQueen stores.
Moving counterclockwise, is a shiny-ish Fendi, which is really not done justice in the photo. It's a bright cherry red perforated leather with black twisted rope handles and side detail. The attention to detail is amazing...tiny logo double Fs adorn the trim around the handle loops...if only they had stopped there, because one of the notable things about these bags was the subtle take on logos and branding for nearly all of them. The giant FF is heavy handed and spoils the bag for me, maybe if those were actually my initials... It's $1,680 from net-a-porter.
Next, is a bag that is another beach ball shaped bucket, this one from Stella McCartney. I love the color, and it is probably more worry free care-wise since it is doubtlessly man made materials. The $995 price tag bothers me because by any name or for any cause, it is still plastic, and call me behind the times, but I can't get over that for more than a few hundred bucks...not even for Stella McCartney. It is available from Intermix.
Last, in the top right, is a bag that brings us full circle. Shiny and silver, this East/West version of Lanvin's Kentucky Tote is another Birkin inspired look. It too has vertical straps, as well as the traditional horizontal one. I love that the foiled silver is paired with gold tone hardware, and brown handles, not the expected black. A little unexpected, but subtle. It is $2,385 and available at Bergdorf Goodman. The tote version is $2,540 Barney's .

Fitting Room Frenzy - Target's GO International Private Label Collection Photos & Mini Review

During a cosmetics-hunting shopping session at Target, I wandered over to the Juniors' Department for a quick browse of the Jovovich-Hawk leftovers and was pleasantly surprised to see the GO International Private Label Collection (which I was anxiously awaiting) on the racks. I thought this collection was launching April 13th, so I was jubilant to see it. There weren't many pieces, and they were hanging on the same racks as the few J-H pieces that were left. I happily grabbed my sizes and headed off to the fitting rooms for a little photoshoot. Please excuse the poor lighting, as it tends to be skewed heavily towards the unflattering yellow side in this particular Target store.

I liked the floaty ombre T-shirt with fluttery sleeves pictured above, however, I didn't buy it because I thought it was too long for me. Other than that, it was comfortable, had a lining, and it was generally well constructed with the exception of a few loose threads on the inside seams.

Up next was the one shoulder jersey dress. It comes in cobalt blue or in black. The photos don't show it, but there is a bow on the shoulder and small ruffles on the bust. I liked the length and the floaty fabric, however, I didn't buy it because it wasn't particularly flattering. Please excuse the boots - I know they don't go with the garments. That's just what I happened to be wearing today.

The shiny tuxedo jacket below actually surprised me a bit. It was more fashion-forward than I'd expect from Target. The exposed zipper was thick and sporty, the fit was tailored, and the shoulders were super wide and structured. Overall, I liked the piece, but I have to admit that I don't know how I'd wear it. Perhaps over a black skirt or LBD. It's not a piece that I'd wear often, as the look is strong and reminds me of 1980s power suits - not a good memory.

My favorite piece on the racks was this strapless gray and yellow dress pictured below. I love the pleating detail at the top and the accented yellow waistline. What's even better is that is has pockets, perfect for stowing my hands away for that nonchalant, casual look. The top has a structured fit with boning and taping on the inside to help it stay put. It's made of 100% cotton, fully lined, and has a sporty yellow exposed zipper in the back. Not bad for $39.99. I can't wait to wear it.

Up next was the trendy Grecian two-tone dress below. This was also $39.99. The inner pink layer is rayon and the outer gray layer is silk. It's a bit sheer, so I'd recommend a slip or some Spanx. The twisting effect on the shoulder is a bit tricky because it's not stitched down, so it may need adjustment upon getting dressed. I will definitely hand wash this one to ensure that the shoulder area doesn't become untwisted. I love the layered detail, which is something I wouldn't normally expect from Target. The dress has an elastic waistband, which makes it comfortable and helps to create a nice blouson effect. (I added a metallic belt.) Overall, it's an inexpensive, feminine dress and I'm very happy with it.

I'm excited to see more pieces from this collection, especially the black jumpsuit and the gray/neon pink shirtdress. You can bet that I'll be checking Target often for new arrivals! How about anyone else...have you seen pieces in the stores and if so, what do you think of them?

Sydney Italian Festival

Hidden in "fashion PR City", is where the likes of Spin Communications, and The Arc Factory are located. This is the rim of the entertainment crater for next weekend. Primo Italiano 07 is held on Sunday 3 June.

Fast becoming known as Sydney’s “Little Italy”, the area is rich in 1800’s architecture, epicurean delights, and of course, fashion abounds – though you don’t have to be one of the “beautiful people” to be there.

Around the city fashion wise: Bulgari has opened a new store at 64-68 Castlereagh Street, and the Italian Trade Commission were recently invited to the Sydney Italian Festival, via an evening of iconic Italian brands including Ferragamo, Zegna, and Cavalli. So expect to see again some of these wealthy, dark, tall handsome types.

Like the parks around Firenze, this tiny complex of streets is scented by herbs and car fumes in the day time, and by garlic, jasmine and cigarette smoke in the evening. We recently visited both Trovata and Giardinetto, on Stanley Street. For superb quality, our favourite is Trovata, but for big gargantuan portions and cute atmosphere, go for Giardinetto.

Take your time here next Sunday, and between 11.00am and 5.00pm (& probably later) you’ll find al fresco dining, fresh food markets, music, dancing, street performers, and wine tasting. Be patient – you’ll be one of many.

Other handmade designer jewelers cannot make that same guarantee. Our designer jewelry is of heirloom quality. Ed Levin collectors have been adding our designs to their jewelry box for decades. About Ed Levin

Levin was born February 4, 1921, in New York City and grew up in Long Beach on Long Island. He studied fine arts at Columbia University, and later at Alfred University, the New School, and the Barnes Foundation. He successfully obtained conscientious objector status during World War II.

In 1948, Levin lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and studied with a Florentine master jeweler. In 1949, Levin married Ruth Perlmutter, and lived on the Upper West Side in New York City.

In 1950, he and his founded Ed Levin Jewelry, and made jewelry on the stove top in their New York apartment. He traveled by bus throughout New England to sell his jewelry to college students. In 1953, the couple moved to Shaftsbury, Vermont, where Levin sold his artwork and jewelry from Ed Levin Arts Workshop, established in a building on their property. In 1964, he moved his workshop to Bennington where he opened a retail shop.

In 1968, Levin married Ruth Pearl Bluestone Dale, bought a house in Cambridge, NY, and moved his wholesale business there. While Levin continued to design jewelry, he also spent time in his studio painting, sculpting, throwing pots, and inventing tools.

Ed Levin Jewelry, Inc., considered the oldest and largest hand-crafted jewelry manufacturer in the United States, is owned by the family and currently sells to hundreds of retail shops throughout the country.

Levin was adamant in his beliefs and followed his own path. Life, for him, was a continuing exploration of ideas, the senses, and challenging the status quo. He actively supported peace, human rights, civil liberties, and environmental protection.

Levin said, "The diversity and richness of the natural world and all of the peoples who have inhabited it will always inspire both art and jewelry. The connections are not necessarily direct or obvious, but our present is still connected to the earth forms and ancestor creations that abound and still touch us."

Edward Levin, of Cambridge, New York, and Cedar Key, Florida, died February 23, 2008, at his home in Cedar Key. He was 87. He was an artist, craftsperson, jeweler, painter, sculptor, ceramist, and inventor of machines, tools, and processes to enhance creativity in jewelry making.
